Highmark Foundation now accepting applications for Healthy School Environment grants

April 6, 2015 | Pittsburgh, Pa.

PITTSBURGH (April 6, 2015) — The Highmark Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2015-2016 "Creating a Healthy School Environment" grant program. This grant program was established because the Highmark Foundation recognizes that schools are powerful places to shape the health, safety, education and well-being of our children. Schools should visit www.highmarkfoundation.org to download an instructional booklet and apply. The deadline to submit applications is May 8, 2015.

In Pennsylvania, 15 public school districts will be awarded grants up to $10,000 each for implementing programs that improve access to school-based health and wellness programs. Non-public schools (private, charter, vocational and parochial) can apply for one of 20 grants of $5,000 that will be awarded in Pennsylvania.

Public, private, vocational, parochial and charter schools throughout West Virginia that serve students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to apply for a $5,000 grant. Fifteen grants will be awarded in West Virginia to help schools create healthier and safer environments for children.

Promoting the health and wellness of children is consistent with the Foundation's goals, strategies and focus to illustrate the effectiveness of early intervention and preventive health programs that address childhood injury prevention, healthy eating and physical activity, physical and environmental health and bullying prevention.

The Highmark Foundation's "Creating a Healthy School Environment" grant program is entering its third year, with overall program grants awarded totaling more than $940,000 for programs in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
