Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health releases 2023 Annual Report

PARKERSBURG (Feb. 28, 2024) — The Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health releases its 2023 Giving Report. This report offers a snapshot into the Fund's efforts to advance the health and well-being of individuals and families throughout West Virginia through partnerships with nonprofits implementing impactful health-related programs and initiatives.

The Charitable Fund is committed to improving residents' overall health, well-being and quality of life in all 55 counties through supporting the day-to-day dedication of meaningful nonprofits that are hands-on in communities across the Mountain State. In 2023, the Fund committed more than $1.6 million to 36 nonprofits through grants focused on oral health, behavioral health, family health, and community health.

Additional 2023 highlights include:

  • The Charitable Fund awarded nearly $500,000 dollars in grant funding nonprofit organizations to address gaps in access to behavioral health and mental health care for West Virginians through a Request For Proposal issued in early 2023.
  • A new scholarship program to address the increasing healthcare worker shortage was established through a two-year $300,000 grant to the St. Mary's Medical Center Foundation for students enrolled in the St. Mary's Medical Center for Excellence's nursing, medical imaging, and respiratory care programs.
  • Fighting against food-insecurity, the Fund awarded a $150,000 grant to the Mountaineer Food Bank's "Veteran's Table" program, which provides West Virginia veterans and their families with monthly food boxes with fresh produce, shelf-stable food, and hygiene items.
